For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?
45 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Babylon, and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 46 At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”
Jeremiah 50:41-46
+
The Lord’s Judgment Is Sure
The Lord’s judgment is not an empty threat. Babylon, mighty and terrifying among the nations, would itself be brought low. The nations may appear powerful and secure, but no earthly kingdom can stand against the judgment of God. Babylon’s coming destruction demonstrates the Lord’s sovereignty over the nations: He raises them up and brings them down according to His will. That warning also exposes our own false confidence. We are tempted to trust in wealth, strength, governments, or our own righteousness. None of these can rescue us when we stand before the holy God. But the Lord who judges is also the Lord who saves. At the cross, Christ endured the judgment that our sins deserved. The mighty were humbled, and the seemingly defeated Christ conquered sin, death, and the devil. Therefore, do not fear the kingdoms of this world. Fear the Lord, trust His mercy, and cling to Christ. His kingdom cannot be shaken.

Yet the Lord is not mocked. He brings down the arrogant and repays wickedness according to His righteous judgment. Babylon, though used by God to discipline His people, was herself accountable for her pride and cruelty. This warning still speaks to us. We are tempted to measure security by what we possess, accomplish, or control. Pride persuades us that we can stand without God. But the Lord humbles those who trust in themselves. Yet the judgment we deserve has fallen upon another: Jesus Christ. At the cross, the righteous Judge bore the punishment of sinners. There, God’s justice and mercy meet. Christ was humbled for our pride so that, through faith, we might be raised with Him. Therefore, do not trust in your strength. Trust in Christ, your crucified and risen Savior.

They flee and escape from the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for his temple.
Jeremiah 50:21-28
+
The Lord’s Judgment and Our Refuge
The Lord’s judgment is announced against Babylon, the proud empire He used to discipline His people. Babylon had conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, and carried Judah into exile. Yet Babylon was not beyond the Lord’s judgment. The conqueror would itself be conquered. The Lord remains sovereign over every nation, and His justice cannot be escaped. For God’s people, this judgment also brings comfort. The Lord does not forget the suffering of His Church or allow wickedness to have the final word. His judgment is certain, even when it seems delayed. We see the certainty of God’s justice most clearly at the cross. There, God’s judgment against sin fell upon His innocent Son. Christ bore the punishment sinners deserved, so that those who trust in Him might receive mercy instead of condemnation. Therefore, we need not fear the Lord’s judgment as those without hope. Our refuge is Christ crucified and risen, who has conquered sin, death, and every enemy.

First the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has gnawed his bones. 18 Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing punishment on the king of Babylon and his land, as I punished the king of Assyria. 19 I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and in Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. 20 In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.
Jeremiah 50:11-20
+
The Shepherd Who Restores His Flock
Jeremiah reminds us that God’s judgment is never arbitrary. Babylon had been used as an instrument of judgment against Judah, yet Babylon itself was not exempt from the Lord’s justice. Its pride, cruelty, and oppression would be answered by the righteous Judge. These chapters announce Babylon’s downfall while also pointing toward the restoration of God’s people. The Lord would bring His scattered flock home and forgive their sins. This is the comfort of the Christian: God’s judgment does not have the final word for those who belong to Him. Our sin deserves judgment, and we cannot rescue ourselves from it. But the Shepherd Himself has come for His wandering sheep. Jesus Christ bore the judgment we deserved upon the cross. There, God’s justice and mercy meet. Because Christ has died and risen, the Lord gathers His people, forgives their iniquity, and gives them peace. Therefore, do not fear the judgment of this world. Trust the Shepherd who has redeemed you.

Babylon had carried Judah into exile and seemed to possess unstoppable power. Yet the Lord declares that Babylon’s dominion will end, while His scattered people will be restored. The Lord remains faithful to His covenant, even when His people experience judgment and suffering. The prophetic picture of Israel and Judah returning to the Lord, seeking Him together and renewing the covenant. Their restoration is ultimately the Lord’s work. This points us beyond Israel’s return from exile to the greater redemption accomplished by Christ. We too were captive, not to Babylon, but to sin, death, and the devil. Christ entered our captivity willingly. Upon the cross, He bore the judgment we deserved and defeated our enemies through His death and resurrection. Therefore, do not despair when earthly powers seem invincible. Christ has conquered. He gathers His scattered sheep, forgives their sins, and leads them safely home.

The Lord declares that He will break its bow and scatter its people. Yet even in this judgment, the Lord promises a future restoration. He remains the Lord over the nations, bringing down human pride and accomplishing His purposes even through judgment. We are tempted to place our confidence in the same things: our abilities, possessions, reputation, or earthly security. But none of these can stand before the Lord. Sin always promises strength while leaving us spiritually helpless. The good news is that Christ came precisely for helpless sinners. At the cross, the apparent weakness of Christ became the victory of God. There our pride is crucified, and our salvation is secured, not by our strength, but by the strength of Christ crucified and risen. Therefore, repent of trusting yourself. Trust the Lord who humbles the proud and raises sinners through His Son.

These peoples trusted in their remote location, their possessions, and their flocks. They lived securely, imagining themselves beyond the reach of danger. Yet the Lord showed that no human strength, wealth, or isolation can place a sinner outside His sight. We are tempted to do the same. We build our lives around careers, homes, savings, reputations, and plans for the future. These are gifts when received from God’s hand, but they become idols when we trust them instead of Him. The Lord humbles the proud because He will not allow us to find salvation in anything except Him. At the cross, Christ bore the judgment our false security deserved. There, the Son of God was stripped of earthly security and counted among sinners so that sinners might be secure in Him. Therefore, do not fear the Lord’s judgment if you are in Christ. Your refuge is not your strength, but your crucified and risen Savior.

Damascus was an ancient and influential city, yet its strength could not save it. The Lord judges the nations for their sin and rebellion. His Word exposes the false security we place in earthly powers. We are tempted to do the same. We trust our possessions, our government, our health, or our own righteousness. But none of these can rescue us when we stand before the holy God. Yet the Lord’s judgment is not the final word for those who belong to Christ. At the cross, God’s righteous judgment against sin fell upon His beloved Son. Jesus bore the punishment we deserved and now gives us His righteousness. Therefore, do not place your confidence in things that perish. Take refuge in Christ crucified. He alone is our sure salvation.

Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her. 19 Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21 At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart of a woman in her birth pains.”
Jeremiah 49:7-22
+
The Lord Judges the Nations
Jeremiah’s oracle against Edom reminds us that no nation, people, or earthly wisdom can stand before the judgment of God. Edom trusted in its own wisdom and secure dwelling places, but the Lord exposes every refuge built apart from Him. Human strength, cleverness, wealth, and earthly security ultimately fail when God calls sinners to account. Yet this warning also directs us to the greater refuge God provides. We cannot hide from His judgment by our own righteousness. Our only shelter is the mercy of God given in Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment that our sins deserved. The One who had every right to condemn sinners instead became the condemned One for us. He was forsaken so that we might be received as God's own. Therefore, do not put your confidence in what the world calls secure. Take refuge in Christ crucified and risen. His cross is the sure refuge for sinners.

Yet the Lord exposes the emptiness of such confidence. Ammon had taken what did not belong to her and boasted in what she possessed, but the Lord would humble her. These chapters contain the Lord’s judgment against the nations surrounding Judah, showing that His righteous rule extends beyond Israel. No nation, ruler, or human strength stands outside His authority. That warning reaches us, too. We are easily tempted to trust in what we have built, earned, or accumulated. But earthly security cannot rescue us from sin or death. The Lord alone saves. And where our pride deserves judgment, Christ bore that judgment for us. At the cross, the Son of God was humbled unto death so that sinners might be exalted by His grace. Therefore, repent of your false securities and cling to Christ, your crucified and risen Lord. In Him, you have a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

The judgment is real, but it is not the final word. The Lord remains sovereign over the nations, bringing down human pride and preserving His purposes even through severe discipline. This reminds us that God’s judgment against sin is never arbitrary. We are sinners who deserve His righteous judgment. Yet the Lord who judges is also the Lord who saves. At the cross, God’s justice and mercy meet. There Christ bore the judgment our sins deserved, suffering under the wrath of God in our place. His resurrection declares that sin, death, and the devil have been defeated. Therefore, we need not despair when God humbles us or exposes our sin. His Law drives us to repentance, while His Gospel gives us Christ. In Him, restoration is certain, not because we deserve it, but because Christ has accomplished our salvation.

Moab’s downfall came because of its arrogance and false confidence. Like Moab, sinners often trust in possessions, achievements, or human wisdom rather than the Lord who gives every blessing. Yet God’s judgment is not the final word for those who belong to Him. At the cross of Christ, God’s justice and mercy meet as Jesus bears the punishment our sins deserve. The Savior’s suffering brings forgiveness and restores us to fellowship with the Father. Therefore, we repent of our pride and cling to Christ alone. He is the true refuge when all earthly foundations crumble. The Lord calls His Church to faithfulness and humility, trusting not in worldly power but in His gracious promises. In Christ, we have a kingdom that cannot fall.

Therefore the riches they gained have perished.
37 “For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. Moab’s downfall came because of pride and reliance upon what could not save. Their cries were not merely over the loss of possessions but over the collapse of the false security in which they had placed their hope. The same temptation remains among us. We often seek comfort in wealth, reputation, accomplishments, or our own wisdom, forgetting that all earthly things pass away. The Lord tears down our idols not to destroy us, but to turn us back to Himself. At the cross, Christ endured the judgment our sins deserved. He was stripped of earthly glory and suffered shame so that we might receive eternal riches. Through His suffering and resurrection, we have a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us repent of false comforts and cling to Christ alone, our sure refuge.

Moab’s judgment came because of its pride and its false confidence in its own accomplishments. The nations may build their towers, gather their treasures, and boast in their achievements, but nothing created can stand before the holy God. Yet the Lord’s judgment is not His final word. The God who humbles the proud is the same God who shows mercy to sinners. In the cross of Christ, we see the greatest act of divine judgment and mercy together. Jesus bore the wrath our pride deserved so that we might receive forgiveness and life. Therefore, repent of every false refuge and cling to Christ alone. He is the true fortress who cannot be shaken, the Savior who delivers His people from sin, death, and the devil.

Moab’s security was shaken as the nation’s false confidence and idols were exposed. Like Moab, sinners often trust in what they have built rather than in the God who gives every blessing. Yet the Lord’s judgment is never separated from His promise of mercy. At the cross of Christ, God’s judgment against sin fell upon His beloved Son, so that repentant sinners might receive forgiveness and life. Jesus empties Himself for our salvation and fills His people with His grace through Word and Sacrament. Let us not cling to passing treasures or human strength but rest in Christ alone. Moab had become confident in its defenses and resources, yet the Lord exposes the emptiness of every refuge built apart from Him. God’s judgment against the nations demonstrates His rule over all peoples and His opposition to pride and idolatry. We, too, are tempted to find security in what we possess, accomplish, or control. But every earthly foundation will eventually fail. The Lord calls His people to repentance and faith, not because He delights in destruction, but because He desires to turn sinners back to Himself. At the cross of Christ, we see both God’s judgment against sin and His mercy toward sinners. Jesus bore the judgment we deserved, becoming our true refuge. In Him alone we have a kingdom that cannot fall.

These judgments demonstrate the Lord’s control over the nations and His faithfulness to accomplish His purposes, even through unexpected means. Human kingdoms rise and fall, but the Word of God remains forever. Yet the God who judges sin is also the God who provides salvation. The same Lord who brings down proud enemies humbled Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. At the cross, God’s judgment against sin was poured out upon His beloved Son so that sinners might receive mercy. Because Christ has conquered death, we need not fear the final judgment. No earthly kingdom, army, or ruler can stand against God's righteous judgment. Yet in the midst of these fearful words comes a gracious promise: "Do not fear." The Lord would discipline His people for their sins, but He would not destroy them. His chastening was meant to bring them to repentance, not to abandon them. The same is true for us. God still disciplines those He loves, calling us away from sin and back to Himself. Though we deserve only judgment, Christ has borne that judgment in our place upon the cross. There God's justice and mercy meet. Because Jesus was forsaken, we are not. Because He died and rose again, we can face every earthly upheaval without fear. The kingdoms of this world rise and fall, but the Lord remains faithful. He will preserve His baptized children and bring them safely into His everlasting kingdom.

For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster. 18 But since we left off making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said, “When we made offerings to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?” 20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 “As for the offerings that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them? Did it not come into his mind? 22 The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and the abominations that you committed. Therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you made offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”
Jeremiah 44:15-23
+
Listen to the Lord
The Lord remembers his people. He hears your prayers and he knows your suffering. This is his nature. He comes down to deliver you. He is constantly sending his Word and his Son to you. The response of unbelief, the response of the pagan world, the response of our old Adam, is to reject that Word and to reject Jesus. The Lord must transform our hearts from the inside out. So, his Holy Spirit works this miracle, that you would have a clean heart and a right relationship with your God. This new heart is made out of nothing. This new heart hears the Word of the Lord and rejoices. This new heart rejoices in the gift of Jesus to you and me. Put away the life of sin and death and instead rejoice in the God that loves you. Listen to his Word and treasure it. When everything else fades and breaks down, the Word of the Lord endures. It is your comfort and your stay.

Behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of the evil that they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to make offerings and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’
5 But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. 6 Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. 7 And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? 8 Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, the evil of the kings of Judah, the evil of their wives, your own evil, and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.
11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine they shall be consumed. From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, and they shall become an oath, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. 13 I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, except some fugitives.”
Jeremiah 44:1-14
+
God is Persistent
In the midst of their sin, God continued to send his holy prophets into their midst. He did not back down from their sin. He does not back down from your sin. He sends his Word to you that you would be healed from your sin and rescued from the jaws of death. He cares for you. This care and love is made manifest in his plan of rescue for our race. He sends his only Son into the flesh of Mary to die and rise again. In so doing he takes on our greatest enemies and defeats death itself. The Lord is persistent. He sends his Word. He sends his prophets. Even in the midst of captivity and discipline, he reserves a remnant for himself. Rejoice, O Christian, your God has sent his Holy Spirit to you with the gifts of heaven. He is the one that has created your faith and has made you his own. Rejoice in his love that he keeps showering on you. Jesus' blood covers you. They ignored the preaching of God's prophet and fled to Egypt. We also ignore and push away the Word of the Lord when it does not suit us. God does not turn a blind eye to our sin. He calls us to count. So he sent Nebuchadnezzar to Egypt and also he disciplines us. Like Jonah, who fled from the presence of the Lord, and ended up in the belly of the great fish, so also we cannot flee from the Lord. He calls us to his Word and he beckons us back to his means of Grace. It is only in the loving embrace of Jesus that we are made whole and new. He removes our sin by the blood of his Son. He transforms us from the inside out by putting his Word in our ears and the Body and Blood of his Son in our mouth. This is the God who disciplines and who also makes alive. We rejoice in his visitation among us.

The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ 3 but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” 4 So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6 the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7 And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes.
Jeremiah 43:1-7
+
Beware of Prophets
The itching ears of sinful men long for the prophets to preach what they want to hear. Those same ears are repulsed by the true Word. The old Adam cannot abide by the Word of the Lord. It is imperative to judge the prophets and pastors by the Word of God alone. This is the very life giving Word of the God that comes to save and make new. The itching ears of Azariah and the insolent men of Judah would not listen to God's Word and they sinned against God and did not listen to his Word. This same Word is life to the new man. Daily, a new man arises in contrition and repentance. You are raised to new life by this God. The true and faithful preaching of God's prophets and pastors applies the blood of Jesus' cross to the wounds of your sinful life. That blood makes you righteous before the Lord. It is the Lord's Word that has done this. His work is marvelous in our eyes.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: If you set your faces to enter Egypt and go to live there, 16 then the sword that you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, and there you shall die. 17 All the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to live there shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. They shall have no remnant or survivor from the disaster that I will bring upon them.
18 “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more. 19 The Lord has said to you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for a certainty that I have warned you this day 20 that you have gone astray at the cost of your lives. For you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and whatever the Lord our God says, declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God in anything that he sent me to tell you. 22 Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.”
Jeremiah 42:13-22
+
Trusting the Lord Above Our Fears
Fear has a way of disguising itself as wisdom. The remnant of Judah sincerely asked Jeremiah to seek the Lord's will, promising to obey whatever He revealed. Yet when God's answer contradicted their plans, their hearts were already set on fleeing to Egypt. They wanted God's approval more than God's direction. We often fall into the same temptation. We pray for guidance but secretly hope the Lord confirms the path we have already chosen. Yet the Lord calls us to trust His promises rather than our fears. His commands are never meant for our harm but for our salvation. Where Judah failed, Christ remained perfectly faithful. In Gethsemane, Jesus submitted completely to His Father's will, even though it led to the cross. There He bore the punishment for our stubbornness and unbelief. Forgiven through His sacrifice, we are freed to trust our gracious Father, knowing His Word always leads us in the way of life.

Do not fear him, declares the Lord, for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand. 12 I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land.
Jeremiah 42:7-12
+
Waiting on the Lord's Word
Waiting is rarely easy, especially when decisions seem urgent. Johanan and the people of Judah sought the Lord's guidance, and Jeremiah faithfully waited until God revealed His answer. The delay reminded them that the Lord speaks according to His perfect wisdom, not our preferred timetable. God's message was one of mercy: if they trusted His promise and remained where He had placed them, He would build them up, protect them, and show them compassion. Sadly, they would soon reject that gracious Word. We are often tempted to seek God's guidance only if it agrees with the plans we have already made. Yet the Lord calls us to trust His Word above our fears and desires. That trust is grounded in Christ. At the cross, God demonstrated beyond all doubt that His intentions toward His people are merciful. The risen Savior continues to strengthen us through His Word and Sacraments, teaching us to wait patiently and follow wherever He leads, confident that His promises never fail.

Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.” 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the Lord your God sends you to us. 6 Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
Jeremiah 42:1-6
+
When We Ask, Are We Ready to Hear?
The people came to Jeremiah with what sounded like a faithful request. They asked him to seek the Lord's will and promised they would obey whatever answer God gave. Their words were admirable, but their hearts were already fixed on the path they wanted to take. The Lord desires more than pious promises; He desires repentance and faith that gladly receive His Word, even when it contradicts our plans. We often approach God the same way, hoping He will bless decisions we have already made. Yet the Lord calls us to submit to His wisdom rather than our own. His commands are never given to harm us but to preserve us in His grace. At the cross, Christ perfectly obeyed His Father's will where we have failed. His faithful obedience has become our righteousness. Forgiven through His blood, we are freed to pray, "Your will be done," trusting that our crucified and risen Savior always leads His people in the way of life.
