Abide in the Love That Holds You

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Abide in the Love That Holds You
Jesus speaks of a love that does not ebb and flow with our strength, mood, or merit. It is the Father’s eternal love, steadfast, self-giving, cruciform. To “abide” in that love is not a command to muster warmer feelings but an invitation to remain where Christ has already placed us: in His grace, in His Word, in His forgiveness. This love is revealed most clearly in the cross, where Jesus’ self-sacrifice defines what love truly is. We are not saved by our loving but by His. Yet, having been embraced by such mercy, we are freed to love one another, not with a love that originates in us, but with the love that flows from Christ’s wounds. When you feel barren, cold, or unfruitful, return to the crucified and risen Lord. His love for you does not flicker. It abides, and in Him, so do you.
