Outside the Camp
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

Outside the Camp
The altar of Christ is the cross, where He offered Himself once for all. Unlike the Old Testament sacrifices, which were eaten by priests or burned outside the camp, Jesus was crucified outside Jerusalem’s walls. He bore our reproach, suffering the shame of our sin so that we might be made holy. As Christians, we are called to follow Him outside the camp, to bear His reproach in a world that rejects Him. This means living as strangers here, longing for the city to come, the heavenly Jerusalem. The cross marks us as His, shaping our lives with suffering and hope. Though the world despises the cross, in it we find our true altar, our lasting city, our eternal home. We do not look for comfort in this life but press on in faith, trusting that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient and that He will bring us home.
