Standing Here
Matthew 16:28
Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.

Standing Here
Standing where we stand now, we have the benefit of the whole revelation of God regarding our salvation in Christ. We know the end of the story, that victory has already been won. For we, like those whom Jesus spoke to so long ago, have not tasted death until we saw the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. But we might wonder, How can this be? When Jesus speaks of seeing the coming of the Son of Man, He does not reference an end of days scenario; rather, He is talking about the everyday life of the Church.
We have seen the Son of Man coming through the Holy Spirit in Baptism. We have seen the Son of Man in, with, and under the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We have seen the coming of the Son of Man as His blood washes us clean in Holy Absolution. Each of us, standing here now in faith, will not taste death, for the Son of Man has given us life. It is true that the wages of sin is death, and that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; yet “For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). We were made righteous because Christ stood in our place and took the punishment meant for us. We rejoice in the knowledge that we have seen the Son of Man though His Word and Sacraments and been given life eternal. Help share the Word of God with our community.
