The Boiling Deep
His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
Job 41:30–31

The Boiling Deep
For most of our history, the deep seas have been a frightening and unknowable place. The darkness of the deep conceals the things of nightmares. Even today there are more of the ocean depths unexplored than explored. And in this darkness the leviathan was king. He churned the waters with his power and struck terror into those unfortunate enough to see him. Even today an even more frightening creature terrorizes the depths of our minds. The devil roams around looking for anyone to devour. He is at home in the darkness yet disguises himself as Lucifer - the Morning Star, the Light Bearer. And in the boiling depths of hell, he comes to kill, steal, and destroy all that God has made good. And as redeemed Christians chosen and claimed by Christ through His Word and Sacraments there is a target placed upon us. In the devil’s rage and fury, he lashes out at God’s people attempting to lead us away from Christ’s path of salvation. But no matter how violent and angry the devil gets, no matter how turbulent he makes the waters of this life, we have a Good Shepherd who leads us into green pastures, beside still waters. And there Christ Jesus quenches our fears with His living water (John 4:10).
