A Life Well Lived
And after this Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, four generations.

A Life Well Lived
The Bible does not tell us precisely how old Job was when he suffered his afflictions, but there is evidence that he was already an old man (15:10). If Job was around 70 when his troubles came it means that he would have been over 200 years old when God called him home. Whatever his age we know that his life after his suffering was blessed. He lived to see his sons’ sons to four generations. This is indeed a life well lived. But we would be remised if we only focused on Job’s life before and after his suffering because his time of trial and tribulation brought him closer to God and the realization that God is God and we are not. He was reminded that all that we have in this life is a gift from God and should not be taken for granted, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (1:22). Job’s time of suffering reminds us that we too will suffer in this life because of who we are in Christ. The devil is always on the prowl, ready to attack God’s people. “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps” (1 Peter 2:21). Job suffered because of His faith, we suffer because of our faith, but more importantly Christ suffered for us so that we might have a life well lived in faith. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24).
