One Judge

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

One Judge
            We love to judge one another. We like to compare to see who is better, who is right. We have become very good at casting aspersions against our brothers and sisters, all created in God's image. We hold others up against the Law and condemn them while ignoring our transgression against that same Law. James warns us against this. We are to be doers of the Law, not judges. We have but one Judge, God Himself. His Law is holy and perfect, just the opposite of ours. It is no excuse that we can’t uphold God’s Law perfectly because of our sinful nature; we are still accountable to it for our actions. And this is why God does what we could never do. In Christ, He upholds the Law perfectly, not for His sake but ours. As He takes on the Law for us, He also takes on the results of our transgressions against it. He takes our death under the Law so that we might live through His Gospel. He gives us His righteousness so that when we stand before our Judge on that last day, He sees not our faults, our hatreds, and our sins, but instead, He sees the righteousness of Christ imputed to us. Our sins were paid for and washed away on a desolate Palestinian hill some two thousand years ago so that Our Judge will see us through His Son and declare us not guilty.
