The Apostolic Salutation
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
2 Peter 1:1–2

The Apostolic Salutation
The apostles call themselves servants just like Jesus called himself a servant. The Greek word that is translated as servant could also be translated as slave. A slave has nothing and is completely dependent upon another. We are dependent upon our Lord, Jesus Christ, but a slave also conforms to his master. The apostles know that to be in Christ Jesus is to be a servant of all. To be a Christian is to be a little Christ that denies ourselves of the carnal pleasures of this world and seeks to serve our neighbor. In our sin we are turned in on ourselves and as such cannot see the needs of our neighbor. In Christ, we are redirected out to those around us. In faith, we can serve and love like Christ who loved us by dying on the cross and rising again. This Jesus makes us like him. He gives us his righteousness and takes our sin to his cross. He gives us life and takes our death.
