Falsehoods

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Falsehoods
“Live your best life now.” “There is one god but many paths to him.” “Don’t take the Bible too literally.” “As long as you are a good person God will reward you.” “Christians will be healthy and wealthy.” “All you have to do is accept Jesus into your heart.” There are many well-meaning people who hold wrong and dangerous ideas about God and His Word. Peter warned the church about this long ago, but the warning still holds today. The devil works overtime through false preachers and false doctrine to pull God’s people away from the truth of salvation by grace alone through faith in Christ alone, revealed in the Scriptures alone. These false beliefs destroy the Christian’s faith and trust in Christ and His victory won on the cross. Therefore, we armor ourselves against these attacks by being in God’s Word, hearing it preached from the pulpit every Sunday, and living a life of prayer we focus on God’s will for His people. And when God’s Word and Sacraments are at the center of our lives the false teachers and heresies are scattered by the truth of the cross and the empty tomb.
