Call on the Name of the Lord
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the LORD calls.

Call on the Name of the Lord
For the Christian, the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ, is a long-anticipated for day. It will be a day of joy and celebration as we begin an eternity with our Lord. Yet before this day comes, there will be great upheaval as the world, the devil, and our own sinful flesh fight against God. We rest secure knowing that though God’s promise of salvation in these passages was originally given to the Judean people of Joel’s age, Jesus extended it to all, including you, through His Word. So now those who call upon the name of the Lord are spared from condemnation on the Day of Judgment. The promise of the book of Joel, as well as all of the Scriptures, is that all those called by the Lord are given the gift of faith. The Lord promises to pour out His life-giving Spirit to His people, and in so doing, He delivers His gifts of salvation. Knowing that the Lord’s judgment may come at any time motivates us to remain ever-watchful and endeavor to be ready for that day. And by His grace, the Lord empowers us to do this very thing as we call on Jesus’ name, and trust that He shall save us.
