A Merciful Hymn
Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.
Micah 7:18–20

A Merciful Hymn
There is no God like the Lord, who reveals His glory in forgiving sins. As we recall the meaning of Micah’s name, “Who is like the Lord?” we ponder the question. The answer is no one. God’s love differs from our love because unlike ours, which often is conditional and temporary, His never ceases. In His love God treads upon our enemies of sin, death, and the devil. As His Son’s heel crushes the serpent’s head. He casts all our sins upon Jesus and clothes us in His righteousness. And in faith we sincerely confess our confidence that God will remove our sins beyond retrieval, just as He removed the threat of Pharaoh’s chariots. In these concluding verses, Micah sings this hymn. One that shouts the truth of our God and His loving and forgiving nature. An assertion only made out of the Holy Spirt given of faith. Likewise, to know and trust in this same God, we are roused in humility of our own unworthiness. With the tax collector in the temple, we are moved to pray, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” And our hope lies in Christ Jesus alone. For He will never leave us nor forsake us.
