Are You Better?
Are you better than Thebes that sat by the Nile, with water around her, her rampart a sea, and water her wall? Cush was her strength; Egypt too, and that without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers. Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity; her infants were dashed in pieces at the head of every street; for her honored men lots were cast, and all her great men were bound in chains. You also will be drunken; you will go into hiding; you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
Nahum 3:8–11

Are You Better?
The only way that you are better than Thebes is by the power and work of Jesus Christ. The only way that your righteousness can exceed that of the scribes and the Pharisees is if you have the righteousness of Jesus. You need a rock to build on and a fortress from which to fight. Jesus is your rock and your foundation. Jesus is your fortress and your safe place. Not only that, he is your sword to fight the good fight of faith as your enemies come upon you. Just like God rescued his people from Egypt, he rescues you from the devil, the world, and your sinful nature. He will not leave you to fight alone. He will not leave you to ambush and darkness. Our enemies love the darkness because they can do their evil in secret, but Jesus is your light and your lamp. He shines in you and in your life, for he is your strength and your helper. He calls you back from exile by the power of his blood. He dies so that he can have you back. To redeem you, he must pay everything, and he gladly does that to have you forever. Thanks be to God for his work among us!
