The Word of the Lord
Zephaniah prophesied during the reforms of King Josiah, who reigned from 640 to 609 B.C., and who bring spiritual revival to Judah after the long and disastrous reign of Manasseh. Zephaniah pronounced God’s judgment on corruption and wickedness but also God’s plan to restore Judah. Zephaniah spoke of the coming “day of the Lord,” when sin would be punished, justice would prevail, and a remnant of the faithful would be saved. This term “day of the Lord” occurs throughout the Bible and refers both to impending historical judgments from God and to His final judgment at the end of time. As the Lord so often did in the days of the prophets, He came to them and spoke through them. Though it was the hand of Zephaniah which wrote these words and it was the voice of Zephaniah which first spoke them to the people, when that happened it was the Word of the Lord which Zephaniah spoke and wrote. As St. Peter would later be inspired to wrote, “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” What great reassurance this gives us to know that when we hear God’s Word we can trust and know it truly is His Word. And the promises there in are ours. Christ has come, by His death and resurrection He has defeated sin, death, and the devil. We are our heavenly Father’s dear children.
