The Church Submits
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Ephesians 5:22–24

The Church Submits
When Saint Paul tells wives to submit, he is telling us about the Church. Christ Jesus comes to gather to himself a holy bride. He washes her and presents her to himself without spot or blemish. This Bride is the Church. She submits to Christ. She does not do it out of compulsion. She does not do it because she is abused or hurt. She does so willingly and gladly because of his love and grace. So also, wives, imitate the Church. They submit because of the love and grace. In our earthly marriages we see modeled there the perfect relationship of Christ and his Church. We learn what it means to live in our vocations from the One who is perfect in them. So, Christ dies and sheds his blood for his bride. That blood cleanses her of her sin and makes her new in him.
