Released from Oppression

And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Mark 1:29–34

Released from Oppression

Jesus would not let the demons speak. He treats them all the same. He treats fevers and illness just the same. He comes that he would release the prisoners from captivity. Sin had caused this. His Word is performative. In the midst of all of it, he speaks and everything listens. This Word of God comes that demons, indeed, even the devil himself, would not have dominion, but that sin would be destroyed and you would be released from the oppression of sin and death. This Jesus accomplishes his work. He makes you free by his cross. He justifies you by his resurrection. He makes you new in himself and he delights in you. Jesus went and the demons shuttered. Jesus comes to you, too. His Word is preached and your sins are destroyed. Thanks be to God that he done this work among us.
