3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”
John 3:1-2

By Night

Nicodemus believes that Jesus is a teacher come from God, but he is still afraid of the council. He recognizes something extraordinary is happening but still cowers behind the curtain of night. He believes Jesus has come from God but doesn’t yet believe that Jesus is God. That will come and that will change everything. No one can call Jesus, “Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. In other words, you must have faith. Faith calls out to him and recognizes him in the sunshine. Our old sinful nature hides us in the darkness. It battles within us to keep our sins hidden and our interests covered. Faith rips open the wound. Faith will lead Nicodemus to go with Joseph of Arimathea to ask Pilate for the body of Jesus. Faith pulls you to the means of grace. The Holy Spirit puts it there and strengthens it to stand firm in storm and night. Faith is your connection to Jesus and his death and his life. Your faith tells you that Jesus is God and that he is your Savior. Thanks be to God.
