God Delivers

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

God Delivers

Surveying the world we live in today, one might almost be excused for thinking that God has lost interest in protecting His people and delivering them from the wickedness which is all around us. Almost. For sure, evil is all around, the wicked seem to not only go unpunished but be rewarded for their wickedness. Yet in these verses, Peter reminds us that God does not count time as we do and that He indeed rescues His people and brings them to Himself. As evidence, Peter reminds us that the rebellious angles, the wickedness in the days of Noah, and in Sodom and Gomorrah did not go unpunished, but it was in God’s time. And in each of these examples, God saved His people, and they were rewarded with life eternal. And so we too can take heart in this knowledge while at the same time looking to an even more assuring testament of God’s love and fidelity, the cross. For there we see that sin, death, and the devil were defeated and that the victory through Christ, has already been won.
