24 “But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

Shame That Leads to Salvation
Jeremiah speaks with painful clarity. Israel finally admits what pride tried to hide: their idolatry brought only shame. The false gods they chased did not bless their crops, protect their families, or save their nation. Instead, generations were consumed by empty worship. This confession marks a turning point, God’s people acknowledge both their sin and the justice of His discipline. This is the hard but holy work of the Law. It strips away excuses. It silences self-justification. It teaches us to lie down in our shame and confess, “We have sinned against the Lord our God.” Such repentance is not despair; it is the beginning of hope. For the Lord does not expose our shame to destroy us, but to redeem us. At the cross, Christ bore the full weight of our idolatry and rebellion. He carried our shame publicly so that we would not bear it eternally. In Him, confessed sin becomes forgiven sin, and shame gives way to mercy.
