Poured Out on Jesus

16 “As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven. And they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger. 19 Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, to their own shame? 20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”
Jeremiah 7:16-20

Poured Out On Jesus
The wrath of God should be poured out on you. You have done great and horrible things. Your rebellion, like the rebellion of those before you, has kindled the anger and the wrath of God against his people. You provoke God with your sin. In the midst of all of this, God sends forth his Son to stand in your place. He puts Jesus where the wrath is showered and directs his anger at Jesus' cross. It is Jesus who is forsaken and who suffers in your place. It is Jesus who keeps and completes the Law for you. It is Jesus who dies in your place. The anger and the wrath of God is spent--just as he promised--yet it is spent entirely on Jesus. He is your propitiation. He is your life and your salvation. As for you, you are wrapped in his righteousness and now the love of God is poured out on you!
