The Gift of Shepherds

15 “‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again. 17 At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18 In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.
Jeremiah 3:15-18

The Gift of Shepherds
The Lord establishes his good gifts for his people. He sees fit that we have food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all we have. He gives us all we need to support us in this body and life. However, he gives us the Means of Grace, too. Everything we need for our soul is supplied by him. The sin of man will not destroy his work among us. The rebellion of man will not change God's nature. His nature is love and he wants to be known by his mercy. Therefore he will give you shepherds that will teach you and fill you with his Word. The Holy Spirit will use their mouths and their hands to give you the gifts of Jesus. The Holy Spirit will enlighten you with heavenly righteousness by preaching. The Holy Spirit will make you righteous by placing the Lord's Supper in your mouth and taking away your sins. It will be God who makes you holy, like he is holy. He will delight in this work and he will dwell with you by this Word. Thanks be to God.
