Lord’s Wrath and Care

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Nahum 1:2–8

Lord’s Wrath and Care
In countless places, the Bible reminds us that the Word of the Lord endures forever. The Lord is always good for his Word. He keeps his promises. When his Word leaves his mouth, it always accomplishes that which he sends it to do. God promises that sin will be punished, and righteousness will be embraced. He calls himself a jealous God and an avenging God. He fights against his enemies and will “by no means clear the guilty” (Nahum 1:3). Everything in creation listens to his voice. The sea and the wind and the mountains all obey his call. Thus, we stand before our God guilty and sinful. Who can stand before his indignation or endure his anger? If God kept a record of sins, who, Lord, could stand? The wrath that sin has kindled is poured out on Jesus on the cross. The guilty are punished on the hill of Golgotha. Jesus goes into the hell of God’s wrath and anger to buy you back from sin and death and the power of the devil. He stills the wrath of God and restores you to your place as children of God. Thanks be to God that he has given us Jesus. The Lord is good and has become our stronghold in the days of trouble.
