The Lord is With Us
Ask rain from the LORD in the season of the spring rain, from the LORD who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field. For the household gods utter nonsense, and the diviners see lies; they tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore the people wander like sheep; they are afflicted for lack of a shepherd. “My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. From him shall come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler—all of them together. They shall be like mighty men in battle, trampling the foe in the mud of the streets; they shall fight because the LORD is with them, and they shall put to shame the riders on horses.

The Lord is With Us
In Israel, rain falls mainly in the winter months. Early rain marked the beginning of the season. For a people dependent upon the land the rains were an ever-present thought. Too much and the crops would be flooded, and the people would starve. Too little and the crops would not sprout, and the people would starve. Those who did not trust in the Lord would flock to the places where their false gods of the land were, to pray to them for deliverance. How little has changed from then to today. We still chase after false gods in hopes of catching their eye and gaining a reward. Yet our idols are just as deaf and dumb as the false idols of Zechariah’s day. And like sheep without a shepherd, we are led astray. But just like then, even today we have the Good Shepherd to lead us. Christ is from the house of Judah and the cornerstone on whom the Church is built. The Lord is truth, His Word is truth, and anything apart from Him is a lie. And with the Lord leading us we turn from lost and cowering sheep to fierce men of battle, as the blood of Christ frees us from our enemies. We fear not the devil, the world, nor our sinful flesh because our Lord is with us.
