The Greatest
A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Greatest
Mohammad Ali once proclaimed, “I am the greatest!” He, of course, was speaking about his boxing skills. Yet, throughout our history, mankind has always strived to be the best. We compete against others and against ourselves to prove that we are the best. Even Jesus’ apostles struggled with this aspect of pride. So Jesus points His arguing apostles, and us, to where true greatness lies, and that is in serving others. And in doing so, He promises them they will share in His honor. Today, we often expect recognition for our service to the Church and feel slighted when ignored. Yet, we have the Lord’s promise that He always sees and will reward our service. But our greatest treasure is not how much we can serve Him but how He serves us, forgiving our sins by grace. For this, it is our duty to thank and praise, serve and obey our gracious Father, for all He has done for us. May we always show our gratitude in service to Him and to our neighbor.
