Blindness
As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Blindness
We live today by faith and not by sight. Jesus does not walk amongst us as He did all those years ago. We cannot reach out and touch His wounds like Thomas did. We cannot sit at His feet and learn as Mary did. And though we are spiritually blind to the things of God, His gift of faith brings sight. As the blind man’s faith made him well, so too does our faith give us healing. For it is in faith that the promises of our Baptisms are secured. It is in faith that God’s Word comes to our ears and strengthens and fortifies our trust in Christ as our Savior. And it is in faith that we touch and hold His true body and blood at His holy altar. Just as a blind beggar overcomes the crowd and cries for sight, so too today must we persist in prayer and in faith. Jesus, great David’s greater Son, brings health and salvation to all who believe. May we ever be as bold as the blind man and cry out to our Savior, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! May the faith given to us allow us to see Him clearly and confess Christ faithfully.
