A Word to the House

11 “And to the house of the king of Judah say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, 12 O house of David! Thus says the Lord:
                        “‘Execute justice in the morning,
and deliver from the hand of the oppressor
him who has been robbed,
                        lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn with none to quench it,
because of your evil deeds.’”
            13          “Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley,
O rock of the plain,
declares the Lord;
                        you who say, ‘Who shall come down against us,
or who shall enter our habitations?’
            14          I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds,
declares the Lord;
I will kindle a fire in her forest,
and it shall devour all that is around her.”

Jeremiah 21:11-14

A Word to the House
The Lord speaks directly to the house of David, not with flattery, but with a call to repentance and justice. The king is to judge rightly, to deliver the oppressed, to act according to God’s Word. Yet the warning is clear: persistent injustice invites God’s righteous judgment. This is not merely political failure but spiritual rebellion against the Lord Himself. This Word confronts us as well. We often trust in our own strength, our own “palaces,” imagining ourselves secure while neglecting mercy and truth. The Law exposes this false confidence and calls us to repent. But God’s final Word is not destruction, it is redemption. Where earthly kings failed, Christ the true Son of David reigns in righteousness. He bears the fire of judgment in His own flesh on the cross. In Him, justice and mercy meet. By His wounds, we are forgiven and made new to live under His gracious rule.
